3 QUESTIONS TO:
MARCUS MÅRTENSON
A work by Marcus Mårtenson (born 1972, lives and works in Stockholm) is instantly recognisable. There are few artists that have that suberp ability to combine text and image to the extent that he possesses. With inspiration from graffiti and underground culture, his works investigate our contemporary world, pointing out social and political events and trends. With his childlike aesthetics combined with the smartness of his text-based comments, his works hit hard in the gut. With a large portion of humour, the subject matter is often deadly serious and talks about the not so flattering aspects of human behavior. On display in our window is the new work “Dungeon” (2020). We checked in with Marcus to see what he is up to at the moment.
What are you working on right now?
- I just finished a painting called “Dungeon”, inspired by all the role plays I played as a child, growing up in the US in the 1980’s. But the monsters have been replaced by contemporary digital dangers.
What will you be reading this summer?
- Right now I am reading “The Dead Zone” by Stephen King and “Human Compatible” by Stuart Russell.
If you are to see one exhibition this summer, which one would you choose?
- That’s a difficult one. It feels like everyone is staying put, given the circumstances we are living with right now. I will mostly chill at the country house and have BBQ’s, but it would be great to see something nice.
Thanks, Marcus!
