MARIA BOIJ
A MOMENT IN TIME
11 March – 9 April
The vanity, it all connects
The hand and the vanity, where the paths align and time has stopped
Where the path parts
The perishable and eternity
The mortals and eternity
The perishable and infinity
The earthly and the time
The human and the clock
The perishable and the clock
The mortals and the clock
A moment in time
A second in time
A moment in timelessness
A second in eternity
A moment in eternity
- MARIA BOIJ
Arsenalsgatan 3 proudly presents the first exhibition by Maria Boij. A Moment in Time consists of a series of sculptures taking over the gallery space. In ceramics, Maria Boij has created a peculiar world where humans and animals live together. Through her sculptural works, we are introduced to a world of dreams and hope, pursuit and tranquility, fear and angst, life and death, and the whole gliding scale between joy and sorrow. The new works radiate greater assurance than previous ones.
The beings of Maria Boij can nevertheless get lost on life’s winding path, but more likely they tread with a bit more hope and reassurance, despite the unmistakable presence of a threatening darkness. The circle of life is the sculptures’ point of departure and, despite the ever-present risk of failure, the characters demonstrate the way forward equipped both with wit and trust. Porcelain clay and stoneware clay are Maria Boij’s principal media. Over the course of her artistic career, the sculptures have grown larger in size while yet being part of the same continuous story; an uninterrupted reflection on the human conditions. The subjects may play different roles, perhaps in an attempt to formulate the many aspects of being human. The animals, however, often adopt the role of the loyal companion, as the anchor on a troubled sea. Maria Boij makes sure that everyone has their role to play on the stage of life.
Maria Boij (born 1966) lives and works in Stockholm.
